Shine a Light Series: Part 1

Shining light on the lives of those who have lost their lives to this cause is my main mission. Today’s story is the life of my dear family friend and classmate, Anthony. Anthony was born in 1997 and lived 20 years before he passed away in 2017. Anthony is most known for his infectious smile and goofy personality. Anthony is also known for his athletic and academic careers. Throughout high school, Anthony was a full time CCP (College Credit Plus) student at the University of Rio Grande. He also participated in many sports including football, wrestling, and baseball. It is because of his athletics he was able to meet and impact many people.

Personally, I knew Anthony through sports and our families. Our parents had gone to school together back in the day. We inevitably grew up together through sports. Anthony and I were the same age and graduated during the same year, 2016. However, our younger brothers were also the same age and graduated the same year, 2019. Our brothers would play fall baseball and football, then transition to basketball season, then onto baseball season in the spring and summer. Therefore, I spent a lot of time with Anthony and his family.

Because of Anthony and his impact on me, I have been able to strengthen certain relationships in my life. When he passed away, it solidified my idea of living life to the fullest and being “All In” in any situation I faced. One relationship in particular that strengthened was that with my mom. I remember specifically at Anthony’s funeral; his father gave me the biggest bear hug and gave me the best advice ever. He told me to love those around me and to be good to my parents. So, ever since that day, I have been closer to my parents.
