Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk

April 18, 2020 at the University of Rio Grande, there will be a campus wide event to promote Suicide Prevention. This event is called the Suicide Prevention Campus Walk and is held annually. This is the 3rd year of this event. Friends, families, classmates, and others affected come together to support those they have lost. They also come together to celebrate the lives of those they have lost.

There are many ways to participate. People create “Teams” of people they are wanting to walk for. For example, the team I plan to walk with is called “Team Chief”. However, you do not have to join a team. Another way people can participate is the walk they complete. Those who are not avid walkers or runners can choose to complete the 1-mile walk, however, they have other lengths of walks to participate in. The final way people can participate is by simply coming and showing support of the people walking.

I personally, have not been to this event. Thinking about going to this event is very upsetting to me. However, I think this year I will finally feel okay to attend this event. I personally have lost many people and would love to walk in honor of them. I think it is important to show support for this cause so that others who are being affected by this issue know that you care for them. Support is so simple but can make such a lasting impact on someone who just needs to know they have someone in their corner to support them.
